Unfortunately, the answer is yes. The mattress is one the most important assets in your home. If the mattress you have is not providing correct support and pressure relief, you will certainly suffer from irregular waking periods, poor sleep quality and pain.
The latest research suggests that during normal sleep cycles we go in and out of NREM (non-REM) and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Specifically, during the REM stage, the brain sends a nuerotransmitter receptors that neutralize your muscle tone and in affect creates a paralytic state. The purpose of this is so you don’t act out your dreams! The issue with REM sleep and your mattress is very important because during the REM stage of sleep you are at the mercy of the mattress. During REM, your muscles that normally support your body are disengaged and the mattress needs to be correctly supporting you or you will subconsciously wake out of REM, thus interrupting this vital sleep stage damaging your sleep quality.
It’s all about Support! Not Firm or Plush (subjective terms made up by the sleep industry).
Proper support needs to be the key focus regarding the selection of your new mattress. There are many things to consider regarding what mattress set is right for your body and sleeping style. I strongly suggest finding a provider who uses technology to help find the proper type of mattress. Mattress shopping shouldn’t be a guessing game and far too often we buy mattresses because of fancy marketing and not “will it perform for specifically for my body type?”
I trust and recommend retailers who have adopted the new Sleep to Live Diagnostic System BedMatch by Kingsdown. Click on this link to learn more and find a provider near you. https://kingsdown.com/bedmatch. This patented technology will identify the support your body requires and what mattress have been tested to delivery it.
